Communion

Does Scripture link communion and God’s love for people?

Throughout the gospels, again and again, Jesus showed compassion to the people He encountered. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus not only preached the gospel of salvation, but He also took time to feed them and meet their physical needs. He didn’t just see a crowd, He saw individuals with spiritual and physical needs and loved them enough to meet those needs. In John 15:13, Jesus says, Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Here, Jesus demonstrates how much He loves us and gives us the example of how we should do likewise. Scripture not only reminds us of what God has done for us, but what He has called us to as His followers.

How can we engage in personal evangelism?

The first step is to be approachable. If you present as tense and irritable, few people will want to engage on any level. Second, look for organic openings in the conversation to bring up matters of faith. The gospel's transformative power is displayed when we share our own stories (Mark 5:18-20). The key is to share the difference Christ has made in your life contrasted with who you are now. Your testimony doesn't need to be dramatic - it needs to be authentic.

Where should our hearts and minds be when we approach the communion table?

We should approach the communion table with humility and reverence, yielded to God. Come with honesty. If there’s something standing between you and your Savior, confess it. Ask God to consecrate you to Him.
