galatians 5:2-12

In Galatians 5:2-15, Paul continues his warning and chastisement of the Galatian believers who have listened to the teachings of the Judaizers, believing salvation could be found in adherence to the Law rather than through Jesus’ sacrifice. Paul uses the analogy of running a race and describes their actions as throwing Galatian believers off track and slowing them down.

In verse 5, Paul says, “For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.” This hope isn’t conditional or a possibility as we typically think of hope, but rather a certainty yet to be fully realized. Our righteousness will be perfected on the day we stand before Him; meanwhile, we eagerly await that day and live in faith so we can demonstrate love and new life in Christ.

What has your faith: the cross or the ceremony?

The cross offers salvation through faith alone. We have no part beyond accepting this free gift from God. The cross demonstrates God's deep love for us, our need for His grace, and that we are sinners in desperate need of that grace. The ceremony places the responsibility of earning righteousness on us, deceiving us into believing we can save ourselves.

It plays out in the way we live out our faith. Do you do things like attending church or reading your Bible because you love God or out of a sense of obligation?

Ultimately, it comes down to one simple question: Is your motivation love or obligation?

  1. Discuss Pastor Christian’s statement, “We have not earned Jesus. He has earned us.”

  2. Answer the question, “What has your faith: the cross or the ceremony?”

  3. What are the things that may hinder new believers from running well? What are the things that get in your way or throw you off course?

  4. How can you protect yourself, your family, and your church from false teaching?

  5. If someone who is not a follower of Christ asks you, “What does it mean that you have freedom after salvation,” how would you answer?
