Series: “ARE WE THERE YET? – Life-Lessons from the Book of Joshua” by Pastor David R. Stokes

Sunday, January 6th 2019:  “GET READY Part 1”

READ: Joshua 1:1-2

DEVOTIONAL:

In Joshua 1:2, God speaks to Joshua and says, "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, GET READY..."

Can you imagine being in Joshua’s position and becoming the leader that followed Moses? Moses is the only person ever to have spoken to God face to face. It was Moses that that defied Pharaoh and it was the example of his courage, faith, and humility that transformed Hebrew slaves into a nation. The Book of Deuteronomy closes with the words: “For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.”

But Joshua had proven he was a man of faith and courage, and he had been Moses right hand man for forty years, so God chooses him to be Moses’ successor. Those were big sandals to fill.

Remember, for forty years, the Israelites had wandered in the desert, waiting to enter the Promised Land, but it was Joshua – not Moses – who was tasked with leading his people across the Jordan and into Canaan. It was Joshua who then led the Children of Israel in battle, defeating kings and conquering cities and territories. With the words, “Get ready,” God was reminding Joshua and the children of Israel to look forward. This isn’t a story about where they’ve been; it’s about where they’re going. It’s not about past failures; it’s about a promise waiting to be fulfilled.

It’s the first Sunday of 2019. The year ahead is ripe with potential. Don’t look back at 2018 – it’s dead. Instead, GET READY.

REFLECTION:

  • THE ULTIMATE SUCCESS EQUATION: Proceeding + Prevailing + Possessing = POTENTIAL

  • Are you looking back at 2018’s disappointments and failures?

  • Are you ready for all God has prepared for you in 2019?
