Sunday, January 21st, 2018: “DARE TO BE DIFFERENT” • Pastor David R. Stokes
My father will turn 85 this year. Karen’s mom, too. Both born in 1933. Pretty good year. It’s hard watching someone you love become elderly and start to become a bit frail. But it’s the stuff of life.
Can you imagine starting a new venture at the age of 85? Caleb did. He’s one of my favorite Bible characters. He was a survivor. He was a winner. He was a visionary. And he was a man of great faith. When he was in his 40s, he stood against the crowd. He dared to be different. Because of this God blessed him.
But my servant Caleb has a DIFFERENT ATTITUDE than the others have. He has remained loyal to me, so I will bring him into the land he explored. His descendants will possess their full share of that land. -- Numbers 14:24 (New Living Translation)
A different attitude. Different from his generation. Different from his peers. Different from the world. Paul was like that. In fact, anyone who is serious about serving the Lord needs a Caleb-like attitude. I describe it as involving:
The great news is that, just as we can have the wisdom of Solomon if we ask the Lord (James 1:5), we can have Caleb’s “different attitude.” And it can pave the way for the anointing and blessing of God.
How have I been “infected” by the negative thinking of others?
How serious am I about the promises of God—do I really believe?
- What is the difference between human arrogance and sanctified stubbornness?
