Series: “I LOVE MY CHURCH” by Pastor David R. Stokes
Sunday, October 14th, 2018: “We Can Do More by Doing Less—It’s About Focused Excellence”
read: John 6:1-13
The mark of good teaching is the capacity to take COMPLEX subjects and make them less COMPLICATED to the student. Great teachers are not those who seek to impress listeners with their knowledge, but rather those who break things down in a way that animates the mind and connects with the heart.
Jesus was the greatest teacher—ever! He was always keeping things simple enough for children, yet profound enough for people like Nicodemus (he held what we today would call a “master’s degree”—See John 3:10 KJV).
One of our values at EXPECTATION CHURCH is: “WE CAN DO MORE BY DOING LESS: It’s About Focused Excellence.” And we find many illustrations about this in scripture, but two stand out.
The Miracle of the FEEDING OF THE FIVE THOUSAND. It’s recorded in all four Gospels, and it reminds us of several things directly on point:
Ministry is the application of spiritual power to human need.
Little is much when God is in it. Like the young boy who gave his lunch to Jesus.
Great blessings flow from grateful brokenness.
What God touches He transforms.
2. The second story that reminds us that WE CAN DO MORE WITH LESS is the classic one about David and Goliath. You may remember that King Saul wanted to outfit the young shepherd boy with his royal armor. But it didn’t fit. In fact, Saul’s armor was a bad fit physically, and a bad fit spiritually.
Here’s the teachable moment. When David went to the brook and picked out five smooth stones with which to fight the giant man, it was a reminder to us that God wants to use what we ALREADY HAVE. There is already something in your life that God can take and use to the benefit of others and advancement of His kingdom. And at EXPECTATION CHURCH, we have FIVE SMOOTH STONES. We may not do all the things some churches do to fill their calendars with things to keep everyone busy, but what we do, we strive to do with EXCELLENCE!
