Series: “THE GOOD FIGHT: Perspectives on SPIRITUAL WARFARE”
Sunday, March 18th, 2018: “Spiritual Armor—Part Two” • Pastor David R. Stokes
As we wrap up our in-depth look at the issue of SPIRITUAL WARFARE, it’s important to learn all we can about the ARMOR OF GOD. There are key concepts that are designed by God to provide vital protection and ultimate victory for us as we wage war against the world, the flesh, and the devil. Last week we discussed TRUTH, RIGHTEOUSNESS, & READINESS. Now we look at the armor’s shield, helmet, and sword.
Along the way, it should become glaringly clear to every follower of Jesus that all the elements of the armor of God connect to one common thread: THE WORD OF GOD. Filling your mind—your whole life—with the scriptures is the way to victory. How’s your relationship with God’s book?
I’ve written the following in every Bible I’ve ever owned: “THIS BOOK WILL KEEP ME FROM SIN, OR SIN WILL KEEP ME FROM THIS BOOK.” End of story. Game over.
The final elements of our armor (shield, helmet, and sword) all involve the scriptures. Roman soldiers used a large shield made of five or six layers of leather. The leather would be treated with oil each day to keep it pliable (think: ANOINTING/HOLY SPIRIT). Then, right before battle, the shield would be soaked in water to the point of saturation (think: Water & the Word, Ephesians 5:26). This would “quench” the fiery darts of the enemy.
The greatest indicator of the health and status of your relationship with God is your relationship with your Bible. Period.
- Have I ever read the Bible from cover to cover?
- When was the last time I memorized/internalized a verse of scripture?
- Am I willing to commit to reading a minimum of three chapters each day? (This will ensure you read through the whole Bible in one year)
- Psalm 119:1-176 (the longest chapter in the Bible is actually ABOUT the Bible)
- II Timothy 2:15, & 3:15-17
- Matthew 4:1-11
