“When a defining moment comes along, you define the moment, or the moment defines you.” – Kevin Costner (from the movie, “TIN CUP”)

Life is filled with “make or break” moments. They come in all shapes and sizes. Defining Moments Come in All Shapes and Sizes:

  • Crises

  • Opportunities

  • Conflict

  • Failure

  • Loss

  • Crossroads

And Defining Moments tell us much about our:

  • Convictions

  • Commitments

  • Character

  • Courage

In the fourth chapter of the Book of Esther, both Mordecai and his younger cousin, Queen Esther, come face to face with their ultimate DEFINING MOMENT.  It becomes clear to both of them that everything before has happened to providentially prepare them for a great crisis. As Mordecai said to Esther, “And who knows but that you have come to this royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 NIV)

From their experience we find clues as to how to prepare for our DEFINING MOMENTS. We must humble ourselves, focus on truth, rely on faithful people, believe in our destiny, and completely abandon ourselves to the grace, mercy, and plan of God. Actually, these are things we should be doing all the time, anyway.

 reflect:

What has been the most significant DEFINING MOMENT of my life?

Why is pride so toxic during DEFINING MOMENTS?

What is wrong with believing in “luck”?
